Why does your dog need a cool coat?
Most dog parents know that dogs can't cool themselves as efficiently as people can. Because of this, overheating or even heatstroke can be a problem. Dogs need other ways of cooling off.
Dogs don't cool themselves like people.
Since they can't depend on sweating to cool off, dogs often find other ways to get comfortable. Left to their own devices, they do things like
- stay out of the heat.
- limit strenuous activity when it's hot.
- play or lay down in the water.
- live where their bodies are most suited (picture Saint Bernard in snowy regions and chihuahuas in tropical regions).
Staying cool and being with their people
However, since people have become involved, dogs can't always do what they might have done before. For example, we ask them to
- be active in the heat when their bodies tell them not to.
- live a climate they aren't suited for.
- stay clean and dry instead of cooling off in the water.
Dogs want to please us. They almost always want to do what their people want them to do. But they need help if they're going to be comfortable and safe. Heatstroke is a real danger, although the risk can be managed. Find out more here.
Ways we can help dogs stay cool
As people have noticed the issues dogs have in staying cool, they've come up with some techniques and products that can help so that dogs can still enjoy their activities with us. You can find products like cooling mats, wading pools, fans, bandanas, and cool coats, to name a few.
Each of these come in several variations and work to differing degrees. My personal favorite is the cool coat because a dog can wear a cool coat to cool off at the same time as when they're playing, working, or whatever. As with the other products, there are several variations to the cooling coat idea.
Why a cool coat is a great option for staying cool
A good cool coat will move with your dog and hold up to whatever they do without restricting their ability to do it well. And, of course, it will keep them comfortably cool to prevent overheating and heatstroke.
I started making my version of a cool coat to provide the most durable, effective, useful product possible. A Made by De dog cool coat is made of synthetic chamois (100% rayon). This fabric stays damp enough to cool for several hours. If wrung out well, it doesn't get your dog wet, even while it's cooling. And when your dog isn't using it, you can let it dry and put it up until the next time. This fabric doesn't get stiff or brittle like real chamois.
If you have a dog that you show in conformation, read this post for more information about products that might help.
Best of all, a Made by De cool coat is custom-made for your dog. This means that it will fit your dog's unique build. Find out more at Made by De. And don't forget, you can sign up to get your 20% off code, good on all purchases.
Dogs deserve our best, whether it's love or clothes
Dogs deserve our best!
It's the time of year when we want to thank those in our lives who have made it better. Isn't your dog someone who has helped improve your life?
Even though your dog won't ask you, you know there are some things you could give them to make their lives better.
Dogs love treats and toys. Sometimes, it's dog clothes if your dog gets cold easily. Whatever it is you want to give your dog, be sure it's something that's got quality. Companies like Chewy or Made by De provide great products.
When you check company information, reputation, and reviews, you can have a better idea of whether the product you're interested in is going to be the best for your dog. Watch out for stuff that's too cheap or that comes from someplace that doesn't have your dog's best interest in mind.
When you pay attention to the details, you'll know you're getting value for your money and giving your dog something that will be good for them.
