Choosing the right cool coat for your show dog
Show dogs are still dogs.
Dogs overheat quickly. Dog parents know this and try to prevent it from being a problem. But life still happens. Dog shows, agility trials, and other events are all over the place during the warmer weather. If you and your dog are going to compete, you need to have a strategy for keeping your dog safe and comfortable.
Different dogs can need cool coats for various reasons.
A wide variety of dog breeds participate in conformation shows, each with their own issues. Because of this, you may be attempting to address needs specific to your breed. Ask yourself the following.
Is your dog muscular? Muscle holds heat, so more muscle means more heat. Your dog could use a coat with maximum cooling features.
Are they flat-faced (brachycephalic)? Dogs with flat faces can't cool themselves by panting as effectively as others. A cool coat that works with their body shape would be helpful.
Do they have a smooth, dark-colored coat? A smooth coat doesn't have air pockets for insulation. And if that coat is black or brown, it holds onto the heat even more. A cool coat that also blocks from the sun might be good.
Does your dog have long fur? If so, smoothing the fur, especially at the topline, is a goal that a good cool coat can help you achieve. A coat that smooths in all the right places would be best.
Why a show dog cool coat from Made by De?
I make each cool coat just for your dog, so it fits just right. If your dog needs it to be long enough to prevent unruly curls or deep enough to cover an ample chest, I can customize that too. That's part of the beauty of having a Made by De cool coat.
In creating a coat, I use synthetic chamois that can dry between uses without becoming brittle and hard to work with. The spandex outer layer adds to the coat's beauty and character and extends the cooling period since it slows the drying process. And these coats are built to last for several show seasons.
