Dog coats and why the fabric is important
What is a dog coat made of?
This seems like a pretty straightforward question, doesn't it? Clothes in general and dog coats, in particular, are made of fabric and other notions like closures or decorations.
But here's the part you might not know; not all fabrics make good dog coats. Some materials might be too flimsy to hold up to the wear a dog will put them through. Other fabrics might sound or feel uncomfortable to your dog. Finally, others might not do the job you're wanting them to do.
If you don't work with fabrics much, you may not know what to consider when you're getting a coat for your best friend. How do you know what it takes to make a good dog coat?
There are several types of coats available for dogs. Therefore, each one has some unique requirements and might be made just a little differently than another. For example, a raincoat has to be waterproof to keep your dog dry. A winter coat usually has insulation of some type to help keep out the cold, but it may or may not be waterproof. The function you want the item to perform will dictate what characteristics are needed.
Types of fabrics used.
Several categories of fabric could be used to make clothing for dogs. What would work best depends on the function of the item.
Waterproof fabric - used for raincoats or for winter coats in combination with a warm lining. Several types of cloth are waterproof, but the most crucial feature is blocking water from soaking through. These fabrics are often rated on durability. If you want your dog to like an item made with this fabric, you also have to consider how well it moves and whether it makes noise when they move. Your dog might not like to wear clothes that are too stiff or make swishy noises.
Fleece - used for pajamas, as a light jacket, or lining for other coats. This fabric comes in several weights but usually has some stretch to it, allowing it to move well with your dog. The heavier the fleece, the warmer it will be and the better it will hold its shape. The best weight will depend on what function you want the item to perform.
Flannel - used for dog diapers, as a lightweight liner, or for some pajamas. This fabric is often all cotton, a natural fiber that doesn't usually cause rubs. It doesn't stretch but is soft and generally comfortable for your dog.
Chamois - used for cooling coats or drying coats. It can be natural sheepskin or synthetic chamois. Natural chamois and some types of synthetic chamois get hard and brittle if wet and then allowed to dry. Other types of synthetic fabric stay more supple. All of them are intended to be absorbent, so personal preference will dictate which one you and your dog prefer.
Spandex - used for slinkies, combined with chamois for cool coats or other specialized items. This fabric, often used for swimsuits, is stretchy but lightweight. It's also tightly woven, so hair doesn't get caught as easily.
You can find dog clothing made of many other types of fabric as well. What will work best depends on what you and your dog need.
