When did dogs start needing clothes?

February 24, 2022|Dog coats

Dogs didn't wear clothes.

For the most part, long ago, people didn't think to put clothes on their dogs. I saw a couple of posts where wealthy, very elite people in Eqypt may have dressed their pets. The rest of the world just let it go. Even 50 years ago, it was a relatively rare occurrence. But somehow, that changed.

Why did dog clothes come about?

When the rich people dressed their pups, it made them look unique. There was probably no other reason because their dogs had all they needed to live a comfortable life. But what about all the other dogs? Most people couldn't really afford to dress them, and practicality ruled that clothes weren't an option.

The world has seasons; fall, winter, spring, and summer. The seasons look different across the globe, from the tropics to the polar regions and everything in between. Those seasons affect dogs in a similar way to how they affect humans. Some dogs would be just fine without any type of help. But others would suffer from the cold or the heat or the rain.

An observant person might have noticed and tried to help their canine friend out. If things were really tough, they might try putting human clothing on their dog. Options were pretty limited, so they would have done the best they could do with what was on hand.

The internet has opened up a ton of options in all areas. Since our pets are so important to us, it's only natural that many of those options are for dogs. With the increased level of attention we give to our dogs and their needs, companies began offering many clothing options. You can find all types of outfits online, from functional to funny to fanciful.

Dogs and clothes

Does your dog need clothes? That depends on several factors.

-  Where you live. If you have a little dog with a smooth coat and live in Arizona, your dog is probably just fine as they are. That same dog in Canada would probably be uncomfortably cold most of the time.

-  How your dog is built. If you have a big dog with a warm fur coat like a Newfoundland, they are probably happy as can be in Minnesota but miserable if you live in Florida. Likewise, a stout dog with muscle can tolerate colder conditions than a slight, lean dog.

-   Does your dog spend much time outside where the climate is not controlled? Without climate control, your dog has to adjust to the existing conditions.

-  Does your dog tolerate any clothing? Some dogs like wearing clothes while others absolutely hate it. Other dogs might learn to accept a coat under certain conditions if they notice the benefits.

Bottom line, not all dogs like clothes or should even wear them. But some of them really want their coats, pajamas, or sweaters. Which type of dog do you have?
