What is synthetic chamois and why does it make great cool coats?

April 13, 2022|Dog cool coats

What is chamois?

Chamois is a popular fabric for cool coats, among other things. Real chamois is made from sheep hides, believe it or not. Because it’s super absorbent, it’s often used for drying cars, or cleaning, as well as dog cool coats.

However, it can be expensive and takes some work to maintain. Plus, if it dries, it can get brittle And become useless.

Why use synthetic chamois?

Since real chamois isn’t always practical, synthetic chamois is often used in it’s place. There are different types available, made of various materials, like PVA, which is spongy, or rayon, which is more fabric-like.

Synthetic chamois is often reusable and machine washable. Some types will get brittle if dried. Most of them will grow mold if kept moist at room temperature. However, if cared for properly, they can be useful for quite a while.

What type of chamois is used in a Made by De dog cool coat?

I chose a version that is 100% rayon. My goal was to produce a product that was effective, easy to maintain and durable enough to last for a long time. This chamois does all of that.

-  Machine washable and air dry-able. I have dried it before, but it decreases longevity of the fabric.

-  Doesn’t get brittle when dry, although you can keep it refrigerated, damp in a bag if you want to.

-  Long lasting.  Some of my cool coats have been in use for several years; a pretty remarkable feat for dog wear.
