When does your dog need a cool coat?
Does your dog get hot faster than other dogs?
All dogs get hot sometimes. For your chihuahua, it might not happen very often. However, if you have a Newfoundland, they're hot almost always. Dogs have unique needs depending on several factors, including size, amount of muscle, coat type, energy level, and environment.
Reasons a dog might overheat quickly
Since dogs are all different, they tend to overheat at different rates and times. Some reasons your dog might need help sooner than others are:
- Amount of muscle. Since muscle produces heat when active, a muscular dog will tend to overheat sooner than other dogs.
- Size. A larger dog may need help sooner than a smaller dog since the ratio of muscle to body surface area is higher. The more surface area a dog has, the easier it is for the excess heat to dissipate.
- Activity level. Since an active dog uses more muscle, they produce more heat and might need cooling sooner than a more sedentary dog.
- Color. Science has taught us that colors hold heat differently. Light colors reflect light, which decreases the amount of heat retained. Dark colors don't reflect as much light, so they tend to hold heat. Your black dog will get hotter quicker than a similar dog that's lighter in color.
- Type of coat. Although it seems like a dog with long fur will overheat sooner than a smooth-coated dog, that isn't always the case. That long fur provides insulation from the elements, cold or hot. It traps air near the body, so the heat doesn't get in as quickly. That means a smooth-coated dog, especially a black one, will have much more trouble in the heat than a fluffy dog.
- Facial features. One of the main ways a dog cools itself is to pant. Dogs that are flat-faced, or brachycephalic, aren't as effective at cooling themselves through panting since their faces are shortened. So they get hot more quickly.
- Location. Some dogs are suited for warmer weather, while others are suited for winter conditions. A cool-weather dog is more likely to have trouble when it gets hot than a warm-weather dog. And if the humidity is high, that problem can be even worse.
