Problems with dog clothes (and how you might fix them)
Dogs and clothes
Canines were not born wearing clothes. But then again, neither were people. We found many reasons to put on pants, shirts, coats, dresses, shoes, etc. While dogs may not have the same reasons for wearing outfits, sometimes clothes can help.
Convincing your dog to wear clothes might not come naturally. Although not all dogs need them, the ones that could benefit sometimes have problems learning to appreciate them. Here are some of the common problems people have when teaching their furry friends about clothes.
My dog refuses to let me put the clothes on.
There are many reasons your dog might not let you put an outfit on them.
- The item seems strange and foreign. A little time for introductions might help the process.
- That coat or pajamas might not fit and don’t feel right going on. You can make sure to check fit before trying to out something on your dog.
- Your dog might remember a bad previous experience with wearing clothes. Taking your time and allowing them to get used to the outfit might help.
My dog chews them up.
Dogs chew. If the reason they chew is to get out of an uncomfortable situation, you might be able to make that situation better.
- If the outfit doesn’t fit, you can alter or replace it to fit better.
- If it makes weird noises, you might be able to train them to accept it.
Some dogs chew more than others. If they truly don’t need the outfit and won’t leave anything on, they might just need to go without. However, some training to help your dog understand the benefits of the outfit might help.
My dog doesn’t want to move with clothes on.
So, you were able to get that outfit on your dog, but now that it’s on, they won’t move. This could be because the fit isn’t right. If clothes are too tight or so loose that they get in the way, it might be uncomfortable for your dog to move.
If you believe your dog would benefit from a particular outfit, there are steps you can take.
- You can check for fit and make sure the outfit you want them to wear fits properly.
- If your dog doesn’t want to move because of the sound they hear, you might be able to train them to accept it. You’ll also find a variety of fabrics available which are less noisy or more comfortable to your dog.
Most dogs can learn to appreciate clothes.
Always necessary for your dog, if you think they would benefit from a warm coat, a cool coat, or pajamas, there are things to try. Many dogs learn to appreciate that outfit once they know it helps and they can be comfortable.
