Does your dog need protection from the summer?

April 17, 2021|Dog coats, Dog situations

What are the effects of summer on your dog's fur?

Warmer temperatures and longer days mean more time outside with your dog.  However, along with that extra outdoor time come issues that can affect you both if you don't take some steps to decrease them.

Summertime means more sun.  While that means outside time is extended, that extra sun can cause some issues.  Your dog's fur can become faded and dry. Besides, light-colored or thin-coated dogs can burn. While fur becomes less attractive, sunburn causes pain for your dog.

But you and your dogs aren't the only ones that love the extra sunlight.  All the weeds, flowers, and grasses do too.  They are everywhere when the warm weather hits.  And along with the plants come burrs and stickers that can be stuck in your dog's fur.  These can be time-consuming and painful to take out, plus leave your dog's fur damaged.

Ways to protect your dog's coat from summer

A dog suit can help block some of the sun's rays to decrease or eliminate these types of problems. Depending on the needs of your dog, you can find various designs to meet your needs. While the fabric needs to block the sun's rays, dog clothing made of lightweight fabric that can breathe is best for hot weather. Spandex or spandex blend fabrics work well for this. Plus, you can spray your dog with water to help them cool off.

-  Full body suits can protect the topline, much of the underneath, legs, and neck

-  A slinkie or dog swimsuit can protect the topline and neck

-  A jumper can protect the topline and back legs.

Summer can be more fun AND less work.

You can take steps to protect your dog's fur and skin.  They'll end up more comfortable, and you'll have less grooming to do when you prevent problems from happening to begin with.   Then you can both move on to the fun part!
